Over 100 mums, dads and children are stepping out for a four mile charity walk this Saturday 20^th August in support of Southmead hospital maternity unit.

The sponsored walk called ‘From Here to Maternity’ is starting at College Green in Bristol at 10am and finishing at Southmead hospital.

The funds raised will go to the ‘Mum’s the word’ appeal helping redevelop the maternity unit at Southmead hospital. The plans include an expanded birthing suite, more consultation rooms for baby scans and a greater number of en-suite facilities for new mums.

The Mum’s the Word appeal has received donations and pledges of over £120,000 since it was launched in Spring 2011. The funds will also help refurbish the delivery suite and create a new family room for mothers, babies and their visitors.

Head of the appeal Trevor Reid said, “We’re so delighted with the response to our ‘From Here to Maternity’ walk. We are holding a bucket collection on the day as well, so we would ask people to please give generously if they see any of our walkers. It will make a big difference to the thousands of mums and babies we care for every year at Southmead hospital.”

The route will include College Green, Broadmead, Stokes Croft, Gloucester Road, Filton Road and Monks Park Avenue.

Trevor added, “It is a free walk to join so anyone wanting to join us can still come along and register on the day. Many people will know how fantastic the Southmead Maternity Unit is, so this is a great opportunity to say thank you and help a very deserving team.”

The Marriott Royal Hotel at College Green is hosting the start of the walk by holding a free breakfast for walkers with tea, coffee, juices and energy bars.
