A 19 year old from Hambrook has raised thousands of pounds for the lung cancer unit at Southmead Hospital which is caring for her Dad. Beth Norman took on the 10,000 feet skydive challenge after her Dad was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer.
Beth originally hoped to raise around £400 for the unit but eventually raised over £3,200 thanks to the support of friends and family.
Beth, who went to Colston's Girls' School, is now on a gap year before going to Bristol University to study Physiology in October. All of the money raised will go to the ‘Shine together’ charity based at Southmead Hospital and will help to buy new equipment and enhance services in the lung cancer unit.
The lung cancer team sees over 200 patients each year with a new diagnosis of lung cancer, in addition to providing long term care for patients and their families and carers after the diagnosis of lung cancer is made.
Beth said, “A few months ago my dad was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer, which has now spread. Since then he has been having treatment at Southmead Lung Cancer clinic and they have been brilliant.”
“Whenever you go to the clinic there is always tea, biscuits and random things like that on offer, anything that makes the treatment easier not only for my dad but also for whoever from my family has gone with him.”
Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist Sarah Smith said, “We are so delighted to have Beth’s support and want to say a huge thank you to her for taking on such an amazing challenge. A diagnosis of lung cancer is devastating for everyone involved not just the patient and our aim is to provide the most supportive environment at what is a very difficult time.”
“All of the money Beth has raised will go straight to helping provide even better care for all of our lung cancer patients in Bristol.”
